  • What makes Early BYRD different from other SEL programs?
Early BYRD creates a unique ecosystem of growth through our NEST sites, BYRD Flight Instructors, and WINGS curriculum. By partnering K-5 schools with trained college students pursuing careers in education and mental health, we deliver high-quality SEL instruction while building a pipeline of future professionals. Our twice-weekly sessions over 10 weeks provide consistent, structured support that integrates seamlessly into the school day.
  • How do you ensure program quality and effectiveness?
Like master birds teaching their young to fly, we carefully train each BYRD Flight Instructor through comprehensive professional development in SEL practices and classroom management. Our WINGS curriculum is grounded in psychological research and aligned with state educational standards. Regular assessment, observation, and feedback from students, teachers, and school administrators help us continuously refine our approach.
  • What commitment is required from partner schools?
Becoming a NEST site involves dedicating two 30-minute time slots per week for each participating class during the 10-week program cycle. Schools also designate a staff liaison to coordinate with our team and participate in brief progress meetings. We provide all necessary materials and resources, making implementation smooth and straightforward.
  • How do you support students' diverse needs and backgrounds?
Our curriculum is designed to be culturally responsive and adaptable to different learning styles and needs. BYRD Flight Instructors receive training in inclusive practices and work closely with classroom teachers to understand and support each student's unique journey. Like a diverse flock moving together, we celebrate and learn from our differences.
  • What role do families and caregivers play in the Early BYRD program?
Families and caregivers are essential members of our nest! We provide regular updates, take-home activities, and engagement opportunities throughout the program. Each semester concludes with a family night celebration where students can showcase their learning and growth. We also offer resources to help families continue practicing SEL skills at home.
